COLOUR
THERAPY
 |
Colour
in Itself can have a profound effect on us on all levels,
physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. |
We
are in a world where colour dominates our lives, from reading signs
on the road to seeing if fruit is ripe to eat. It affects our moods
- blue is calming - red can make us tense. We use and experience
colour everyday in our lives without even appreciating it.
WAVE
LENGTHS AND FREQUENCIES
Colour is simply light of different wavelengths and frequencies
and light is just one form of energy made up from photons. We are
all surrounded by electromagnetic waves of energy of which colour
is just a small part.
The visible spectrum as we see it consists of the rainbow. Our retinas
though have three types of colour receptors in the form of cones.
We can only detect three of these colours - red - blue and green.
These colours are called additive primaries. It is these three colours
that are mixed to create all of the other colours we see.
The wavelength and frequency of light we see, influences the colour
we see. The seven colours of the spectrum all have varying wavelengths
and frequencies. Red is at the lower end of the spectrum and has
a higher wavelength but lower frequency to that of Violet at the
top end of the spectrum which has a lower wavelength and higher
frequency.
WHAT
ARE CHAKRAS?
There are seven main energy centres (chakras) of the body which
resonate with the seven rainbow colours. Anyone who is familiar
with Acupuncture will realise that there are, however, a large number
of minor chakras throughout the body totalling something in excess
of 300.
Chakras are like spirals of energy, each one relating to the others.
Chakra (pronounced sha-kra) is the Sanskrit word for ' wheel '.
If you can imagine the main chakras / energy centres as a set of
cogs/wheels, they are rather like the workings of a clock or an
engine; each cog /wheel needs to move smoothly and at a similar
speed for the clock / engine to work properly.
Thus good health and well being is achieved by a balance of all
these energies (or the smooth running of the cogs/wheels).
COLOUR
THERAPY USES COLOUR TO BALANCE THE CHAKRAS OF THE BODY
Each of the spectrum colours is simply light of varying wavelengths,
thus each colour has its own particular energy.
The energy relating to each of these spectrum colours resonates
with the energy of each of the seven main chakras of the body.
Colour therapy can help to re balance these 'wheels' by applying
the appropriate colour to the body and therefore re-balance our
chakras. Listed below is each of the spectrum colours and the chakra
which it relates to. Violet has the shortest wavelength and red
the longest wave length.
THE
COLOURS AND ASSOCIATED CHAKRAS
Violet relates to the crown chakra, and red the base chakra. Colour
is absorbed by the eyes, skin and skull and our electro-magnetic
field/aura. The energy of colour can have an affect upon us on all
levels, that is to say, physical, spiritual and emotional. Every
cell in the body needs light energy - thus colour energy has widespread
influence on the whole body.
Your Colour therapist will help you to understand your need for
a certain colour or colours. Your colour choices can tell a professional
Colour Therapist a lot about you and can indicate where there may
be an imbalance of colour which can indicate a potential problem;
whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual and also gives
indications of personality issues which may need to be looked at.
The physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects make up the
whole person and really one cannot be isolated from the other.
Colour Therapy is a totally holistic and non-invasive therapy and,
really, colour should be a part of our everyday life, not just something
we experience for an hour or two with a therapist. Colour is all
around us everywhere. This wonderful planet does not contain all
the beautiful colours of the rainbow for no reason. Nothing on this
earth is here just by chance; everything in nature is here for a
purpose. Colour is no exception. All we need to do is to heighten
our awareness of the energy of colour and how it can transform our
lives. The capacity for health and well being is within us all.

COLOUR
THERAPY CAN BE DELIVERED IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS
Colour can be used in many different ways, some of which are
mentioned below.
Silk scarves placed on the body and healing energy passed
through hands and through scarves to the recipient.
Colour Breathing using a visualising technique and breathing
in different colours to balance and harmonise the body.
Aromatherapy Oils, this is the most common one that I tend
to work with. Aromatherapy is the ancient art of using essential
oils to improve health.
Essential
oils are extracted from plants, herbs, flowers and trees and
contain many healing properties that can be used to treat
a wide variety of ailments and of course each essential oil
has a colour – a vibration, therefore great to use in
colour therapy.

experiencing the living element in the flow of colour, we
come, one might say, out of our own form and share the cosmic
life”
